Archaeology is the discipline involving the reconstruction, explanation and interpretation of the past through material remains from archaeological sites. The discipline is mainly concerned with artifacts and sites of prehistoric and early historic times, such as the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Ages. Archaeological artifacts include stone tools, pottery remains, metal artifacts and bones. Archaeology students devote their time and effort to both class work and field studies. They learn how to collect, analyze and interpret archaeological material by studying archaeological methods and theories. Courses regarding prehistoric and early historic cultural events of Korea, China, Japan, and other parts of the world are offered. Field training involves occasional and organized surveys, excavations and other field data processing techniques.
Career Opportunities
Students who are interested in the study of archaeology are strongly encouraged to continue their studies at graduate school. M.A. and Ph.D. programs are provided in the department. Academic positions are available for qualified students and professionals. Graduate students apply for curator positions at national and public museums and institutions.
