Department of Civil Engineering
Introduction

The Department of Civil Engineering studies and develops the skills of construction to change and improve the natural environment for the advancement of national welfare; a national land development, citizen housing space construction and industrial base making, in order to minimize the rate of natural environmental disruption and natural disasters. There are structural engineering, hydraulics and environmental engineering, soil mechanics and the survey mechanics as subfields. In structural mechanics, the structural design and the development of new structural materials are dealt with. The qualitative and quantitative supplement and management of water resources are studied in hydraulic engineering. In soil mechanics, ground formation and rock configuration is studied. The movement of soil and rock is analyzed so they can be connected to the stability of structures and the skill of profitable soil development. Survey analysis of three-dimensional images, photo surveys and reflex data of earth satellites provide geographical information for the basis of the nationally-scoped construction department.

Career Opportunities

After graduation, the qualified students enter many state-run trade associations connected with construction such as the Rural Development Corporation, Korea Land Corporation, and the Construction Department. Students also work as public servants in construction fields such as provincial offices, city halls, and as teachers. The graduates are especially sought after for the West Coast Express Way, and the development of residential areas in rural and in the large-scale reclamation works on the West and South Coasts.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry
Introduction

The department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry is established by merging two departments: chemical engineering and fine chemical engineering & applied chemistry. In this newly established department, 17 full-time Professors, approximately 400 undergraduate students, and 170 graduate students including the master and doctoral candidates. Our undergraduate curriculum offers the outstanding program to introduce the fundamental knowledge in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, reaction kinetics and process control engineering. Based on these basic knowledges, the students further can develope the expertise in the applied chemical engineering: an operation of plants, a production of chemicals from oil refinery, manufacturing the high valuable products such as organic materials, fine ceramics, functional polymers, hybrid materials, a surface processing technology, a recycle technology, an energy and environmental technology and so on. Additionally, the students can take the special program provided by Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK), which might lead the students to become an excellent engineer who is highly customized in the industrial demand. The graduates will not only have a specialty in analytical analysis skills but also provide the innovative solutions to cope with the real complicated chemical world problems.

Career Opportunities

After graduation, the undergraduate students can become an active engineer in the chemical and biological industries, a researcher in the research institutes, an officer in the governmental administrative offices. In addition, the students might have a profound understanding in a specific subject which could be relevant to the chemical engineering and applied chemistry. After completion of graduate courses, the students who might have either a master or a doctoral degree can work for the academic or the research institutes.

The Division of Computer Convergence
Introduction

Computer science & engineering studies the structure of computer and effective use of computer which play a role of engine in all human activities including: culture, society, economics and technology areas. To do this, students commonly study hardware (semiconductor design, computer structure, computer system design, data communication) and software (network programming, database, operating system, algorithm, computer graphics, software engineering, artificial intelligence) and select one out of multimedia system, software engineering, database system, computer performance analysis, system software, computer network and mobile communication as a major in senior. This is an in-depth program to study practical abilities based on basic academics.

Career Opportunities

Since the need for computer engineers is constantly increasing in and out of the country, the future is brighter than in other majors. Computer engineers can go to large companies that are directly or indirectly related to computers, small and medium companies, public agencies, banks, hardware and software development companies, or go to academic areas through major research centers in and out of the country.

Department of Organic Materials Engineering
Introduction

Organic materials have begun to be widely used since the mid-20th century. And now its industry of Korea is top 5 in the world in the producing quality. Our goal is to produce creative organic materials engineers who can effectively contribute to the technical fields in the industry, academia, and government. Organic materials engineers seek to understand and manipulate the basic structure of organic and hybrid materials in order to make the products of technology faster, stronger, lighter, brighter, safer, and better suited to human needs.

In the undergraduate course, the curriculum includes the synthesis, chemistry, physics, rheology, and processing of organic materials. In the graduate course, the curriculum covers the brand new topics about the polymer and fiber materials for the high performance chemical materials, energy, electronics, automobiles, and medical engineering as a core of information technology (IT)·biotechnology (BT)·nanotechnology (NT)·energy and environmental technology (ET) industry.

Advanced organic materials engineering is the discipline devoted to helping human beings use materials more effectively and efficiently. Organic materials scientists and engineers focus on the manipulation of atomic scale structure to change materials properties. This focus has pushed our discipline to the forefront of developing and applying new tools to observe and control matter at the smallest scales. These advances continue to play a crucial role in the convergence of fields such as NT, BT, ET, and information communication technology (ICT) for the future century.

Career Opportunities

Approximately 400 graduate and undergraduate students and 15 faculty members comprise our department. More than one third of our undergraduates subsequently earn graduate or professional degrees, while others find employment in chemistry, materials, plastics, textiles, medical/biomedical, automotive, electronics, and other consumer products industries. We are very proud of our much higher graduate employment rates than the average of the engineering college’s.

After the graduation, students can work in the industries related to chemicals such as LG, Samsung, Hyosung, Doosan, Hanhwa, SK, Kolon, and Hankook Tire, etc. Other job opportunities are in the government established research institutes such as KIST, KRICT, KAERI, KIER, etc.
