Department of Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine and molecular imaging involve a signal producing imaging agent (radiopharmaceutical or probe) that is introduced into the body, usually by injection, and imaging device capable of detecting and using th probe's signals to create detailed images. Probes, which are designed to accumulate in a specific organ or attach to certain cells, enable cell activity and biological process to be visualized and measured. The cell-targeting ability of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging agents offers an excellent means of delivering treatment.

Career Opportunities

Nuclear medicine is promising division of recent medical territory. Nuclear medicine is 4-year residency program. After the training is done, we work as a specialist in many medical fields including tertiary hospitals, research institutes, or other organizations using radiation or radiopharmaceuticals.

Department of Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is the special field of operative treatment of space-occupying lesions, such as tumors, hematomas, malformations, infection, degenerative changes, injuries, and other surgically reachable entities of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and cerebrovascular system. Specialized divisions of neurosurgery are vascular, oncological, spinal, peripheral, functional, pediatric, and skull base neurosurgeries. Neurosurgeons provide the operative and non-operative management (i.e., prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, critical care and rehabilitation) of neurological disorders.

Career Opportunities

During this residency training, neurosurgeons are trained in all aspects of neurosurgery, including the cerebrovascular system, the spine and spinal cord, trauma, tumors, pain management and pediatric surgery. General neurosurgeons can manage their own clinics. To practice advanced specialization within neurosurgery, additional higher fellowship training of one to two years is expected from the neurosurgeon. Those who major in specialized neurosurgical division have many options to acquire their occupation, for example a faculty of university hospital and a specialist of clinical center.

Department of Microbiology

Our department was established in 1970 and has been committed to education in microbiology and immunology. Our main research areas include the study of respiratory pathogens, development of rapid and immunological diagnostic methods for tuberculosis, research on novel tuberculosis vaccines, and investigation of host defense mechanisms during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. These efforts contribute to advancing effective diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for tuberculosis.

Department of Infection Biology
Department of Infection Biology

Infection Biology is dedicated to advancing the understanding of infectious diseases caused by parasitic organisms. Our research focuses on elucidating the intricate molecular, cellular, and immunological interactions that occur between parasites and their host cells during infection. By employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology, we seek to unravel the fundamental mechanisms underlying parasite invasion, host immune responses, and the progression of disease. Through these efforts, we aim not only to identify critical factors contributing to pathogenesis but also to provide a scientific basis for the development of novel therapeutic strategies and preventive interventions against various infectious diseases.

Career Opportunities

Those who major in infection biology work as medical doctors, scientists such as biologists and biomedical scientists and professors in the university or research institute.

Department of internal Medicine
Department of internal Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine at Chungnam National University School of Medicine. As one of the core academic departments, we are dedicated to advancing the science and practice of adult medicine through excellence in education, clinical care, and research.

Our department includes a wide range of subspecialties, including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology and oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonology and allergy, and rheumatology. Brief descriptions of each subspecialty are provided below;

Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Our cardiologists treat a wide range of conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and valvular heart disease. Advanced diagnostic imaging, interventional procedures and preventive cardiology services are integral to our clinical and research efforts.

Division of Pulmonology and Allergy

The Division of Pulmonology and Allergy provides comprehensive care for a wide range of respiratory and allergic diseases. Our pulmonologists manage pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, NTM, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer. We also provide critical care services in the intensive care unit (ICU) and offer advanced diagnostic procedures such as pulmonary function tests and bronchoscopy. Our allergists diagnose and treat conditions including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies. Through evidence-based therapies, we aim to deliver personalized and high-quality care tailored to each patient's needs.

Endocrinology

The Division of Endocrinology focuses on disorders of the endocrine system, including diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, adrenal and pituitary disorders, and metabolic bone disease. Our team provides comprehensive care using the latest diagnostic testing and therapeutic strategies, with an emphasis on chronic disease management and patient education.

Gastroenterology

The Division of Gastroenterology addresses diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. This includes conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, eophageal cancer, gastric cancer, liver cirrhosis, biliary disorders, pancreatic disorders, and colorectal cancer. The division provides various advanced endoscopic procedures (ESD, POEM, ARMS, LECS), chemotherapy & immunotherapy of GI cancer, EUS guided procedure, PEG & stent insertion for palliative and supportive care, hepatology services, and nutrition support, integrating clinical expertise with cutting-edge research.

Hematology and Oncology

This combined division provides diagnosis and treatment for blood disorders and malignancies. Hematology covers anemia, clotting disorders, and hematologic malignancies, while oncology encompasses the full spectrum of cancer care. We offer multidisciplinary cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and clinical trial enrollment, alongside palliative and supportive care services.

Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases manages complex infections such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, sepsis, and tropical diseases, as well as infections in immunocompromised hosts. Specialists in this division also oversee antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention, and response to emerging infectious threats. Clinical and translational research are key pillars of this division’s mission.

Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology is dedicated to the care of patients with kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, electrolyte imbalances, and end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or transplantation. Our nephrologists work closely with transplant teams and provide inpatient and outpatient services, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Rheumatology

The Division of Rheumatology focuses on autoimmune and inflammatory diseases affecting the joints, muscles, and connective tissues, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis. The division provides multidisciplinary care with access to advanced immunologic diagnostics, biologic therapies, and long-term disease management strategies.

Faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized leaders committed to mentoring medical students.

We provide comprehensive, evidence-based training that equips future physicians with the skills and knowledge needed to meet today’s complex healthcare challenges. Our robust research programs span basic science, translational, and clinical research, with active collaboration across disciplines.

Through innovation, academic rigor, and patient-centered care, we strive to shape the future of internal medicine.
